Wilbraham Motel

Hasmita and Ganshyam Patel's story is one woven from struggle, resilience, and the unwavering support of family. Immigrating from India with nothing more than hope and a baby on the way, they landed in a strange land, Wilbraham, Massachusetts, with little more than a dream. Their journey, however, is not paved with gold, but with sweat, tears, and the unwavering determination to build a better life for themselves and their children.

Their first home in America was far from the dream they envisioned. Coming with a mere $51 in their pockets and initially living with her older brother, the couple found themselves able to purchase the Wilbraham Motel. Fast forward to an eigh- month pregnant Hasmita, they found themselves sleeping in their house attached to the motel, a kitchen floor crawling with cockroaches, a single sheet and pillow their only comfort. With a growing family and a constant stream of guests, their tiny two-bedroom apartment overflowed with humanity. Privacy was a luxury they couldn't afford, but amidst the chaos, they found strength in their unity.

The motel business, which quickly became their support, transformed into a lifestyle in order to keep afloat. Working 24/7, they juggled cleaning rooms, managing the front desk, and caring for their children. Nights were fractured affairs, filled with stolen moments of sleep and the constant worry of ringing bells and crying babies. The burden Hasmita and Ganshyam carried was immense. Torn between the demands of parenthood and the relentless needs of the business, Hasmita had to bottle-feed her children, as she didn't have enough time in the day to juggle with the demanding need and attention of both the Wilbraham Motel and her children.

Their story is not without its share of darkness. The ever-present threat of discrimination loomed large. Guests would turn away upon seeing their skin color, their dreams dismissed with a racist slur. Another night was shattered by the horror of a robbery. The silence of the night was broken by the shattering of glass and the terrifying thud of footsteps. In a flash, their world was turned upside down. Armed men stormed into their office, their faces masked by rage in the middle of the night. Hasmita's heart hammered as they pointed a gun at her young son, Ashish, barely eighteen months old. The chilling words echoed in the air - "Give us money and jewelry or we kill your baby!" In the moments to come Ganshyam and Hasmita were on their knees with their heads down, a gun pointing to both of their heads, when the gun triggered, each of them thought the other was shot, just to find out the robber’s fired a bullet to the house to scare them. Years of struggle, of building a new life in a foreign land, threatened to crumble in an instant. In a daze, the couple surrendered their valuables, praying it would be enough. The robbers scooped up their loot and fled, leaving behind a trail of terror and shattered innocence. Ashish, thankfully unharmed but deeply shaken, clung to his mother. In the aftermath of the robbery, the once-welcoming motel felt like a newfound prison, a constant reminder of their vulnerability. Yet, amidst the fear, there was an undercurrent of defiance. This brutal act would not break them. It would only strengthen their resolve to build a secure future for their family.

But amidst the hardship, there were glimmers of hope. Slowly, steadily, the tide began to turn. With each passing year, their hard work began to bear fruit. The Wilbraham Motel became a stepping stone, a foundation for bigger dreams. They built new hotels, and ventured into franchises, and their small family business blossomed into a successful enterprise.

Financial success, however, was never their sole pursuit. Education was their mantra, the key to unlocking a future unburdened by the backbreaking labor that defined their own lives. Their children, raised amidst the whir of the motel industry,  stepped into a world of opportunity.  They became living testaments to the power of hard work and sacrifice.

Hasmita and Ganshyam Patel's story transcends the boundaries of their family. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of the immigrant community in America. They came with nothing but a dream, and through sheer grit and determination, they carved a space for themselves. Their story is a tapestry woven with threads of unity, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to family. It is a story that echoes the experiences of countless immigrants who have braved new worlds to build a better life.

As Hasmita reflects on her journey, her message is simple: stay united, help each other, and take pride in what you do.  Their legacy is not merely in the motels they built but in the values they instilled in their family and the inspiration they provide to future generations.  Their story reminds us that the American Dream, though often elusive, can be achieved through relentless hard work, unwavering family support, and the courage to start again, even when the floor beneath you is crawling with roaches.
